Getting to Know Your Piano
Pianists and piano teachers possess many skills and experiences, but understanding the instrument itself and its care is often not part of our training. The condition of the pianos that your students encounter is fundamental to their experience as a musician. Bring your favorite questions regarding piano tuning and maintenance to our VLMTA meeting at 10 am Friday, November 21 for an opportunity to hear answers from a North Carolina piano technician with over 40 years of experience in home service work, piano rebuilding, concert service, and maintenance of college and university pianos.
John Foy received his BA in Music from Oberlin College in 1979 where he studied piano with Peter Takács. He then completed a two-year course in Piano Technology from the North Bennet St School in Boston, MA. After graduating, he returned to Greensboro, where he grew up, and has been tuning and rebuilding pianos for the past 44 years. He has worked as the staff piano technician for UNC-CH, and as the Head Concert Technician for the Brevard Music Festival. He currently specializes in home service tuning and repair, along with grand piano action rebuilding.
